Small Drawings
Made on watercolour paper with water-soluble colour pencils and acrylic gouache, these are playful works. I often start with just a feeling; This puts me in mind of a colour palette and certain shapes; the work then develops from there with decisions made as the process develops. The works may be small – they are made on A6 or A5 paper – but the chosen media allows for precision and complexity.
The pictures’ subjects fall into broad categories; so while they are abstract – they can be read as landscapes, gardens, interiors, townscapes; Some are empty of people, others suggest figures moving in shadows.
My work is made in response to the world around me – in part the landscape of South Oxfordshire, near where I live – but it is the world’s fleeting qualities, observed and experienced, of shadows moving, seasons changing, and weather effects; my own changing thoughts and emotions in response, that are the source of these images.
Creating these pieces comes from a yearning for completion, for compositional and colour harmony that satisfies the eye. In doing so the work points to something beyond this world, something more.
They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19: 3&4
