Last week the school where I work presented commemorative mugs to all staff and pupils. I had enormous fun designing the mugs, and I thought it would be interesting to document here the process of design and manufacture.

We began with ideas for a matt black mug with the rhodamine red (pink) and white logo set on the side. The first manufacturers we contacted revealed quite quickly that this was going to be very difficult if not impossible; very bright pinks were hard to produce in fired glaze colours. It quickly became clear that the newish process of 4 colour (CMYK) ceramic decals would be used and a complicated and rich design – that would justify the mugs relatively high retail cost would be needed.
